TEMBÚRÚTHI

The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.” — Psalm 119:130

Yesterday evening, I had one of those hearty laughter moments with the Matriarch of the Karanja household. You know those conversations that start lightly, but somehow leave you thinking long after? Well, she introduced a Kikuyu word I had never heard all my life — Temburũthi!

Now, given how the years have gathered behind me, discovering a new word felt like finding treasure in familiar soil. Turns out, Temburũthi simply means table. But she didn’t stop there. With that deep and strict tone, she cautioned me — “Don’t live a life as complex as a Temburũthi ya Gũcookereria.” I laughed hard. But later, those words began to echo.

A Temburũthi ya Gũcookereria — a multiplication table — looks simple on the surface. Rows and columns. But within it lies a world of endless combinations and outcomes. A single number multiplied differently yields a completely different result. The table is a maze of possibilities — all dependent on what number you choose to pair with another.

And that, right there, is life.

Every day, we make choices — decisions that multiply into consequences, some beautiful, others complicated.

God has given us free will, but with it comes the responsibility to choose wisely. Life can be as simple or as complex as we make it.

When we insist on controlling everything, comparing ourselves to everyone, or overloading our plates with what God never assigned us, life quickly becomes a Temburũthi ya Gũcookereria — confusing, tiring, and endless in its calculations.

But when we choose simplicity — when we live content, trust God with the unknowns, and remain faithful with what’s before us — life regains its rhythm. Peace returns. Clarity settles.

Jesus lived simply, not because He lacked options, but because He understood purpose. He didn’t multiply distractions — He multiplied bread, faith, and grace. He showed us that simplicity anchored in obedience brings abundance without confusion.

So today, maybe that’s the reminder we all need:
Don’t let your life become a Temburũthi ya Gũcookereria.

Let God simplify it:

  • Choose to live with focus.
  • Choose contentment over comparison.
  • Choose clarity over clutter.

And above all, choose God’s will over your own.
Because a simple life — when lived in God’s light — multiplies peace, not pressure.
