“But Joshua had commanded the people, ‘Do not give a war cry, do not raise your voices, do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout.’” Johsua 6:10
There is this Famous TikTok Evangelist who likes joking with the words “SHUT UP.” And listen, I’m not the one to point fingers at the ordained — God forbid — but every time he says it, something inside me gets intrigued and slightly tickled. Yet, the more I think about it, the more I realize Life itself is shouting at us every day.
Have you ever just gotten home, closed the door behind you, and felt that heavy relief — like “finally… silence!” Hata simu ikilia, unaskia iko na madharau. You look at it like, not today 😂
The world is too noisy. Too many opinions. Too many angles. .” Too many notifications.
And sometimes—truth be told—we carry that noise into our walk with God.
And today, as I sat with Joshua 6:10, that scripture made a lot of sense — it settled in my spirit with weight. The more I looked at it, the more I realized that when God told them, “Do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout,” He wasn’t teaching them patience, and He wasn’t punishing them. It wasn’t passiveness either. It was silence — the kind of silence that is deliberate, intentional, and necessary.
Because when you think about it, the walls of Jericho did not fall because Israel shouted loudly. The volume wasn’t the miracle. The miracle was hidden in the quiet.
The walls fell because Israel kept silent long enough for God to work. Silence became the real weapon; the shout was only the manifestation of what their stillness had already accomplished. Here are my thoughts on this
- There are seasons where God fights best when we keep quiet. Some battles are not won through explanation, defense, or arguments. Some battles are won simply by stepping back and letting God handle the noise on your behalf.
- Not every battle requires commentary. There are people who want you to fail just so you can come and explain yourself. Others try to pull you into debates you were never meant to enter. But sometimes the Spirit nudges you and says, “Shhhh… let Me talk for you.”
- Silence is obedience, discipline, and protection against doubt. If Israel started talking too soon, they would have talked themselves out of the miracle. You can almost imagine the conversations:
- “Hii plan ya kutembea tu around walls? Are we sure?”
- “Why are we not fighting?”
- “Joshua, honestly, is this necessary?”
Doubt spreads faster than faith. Silence was God’s way of protecting them from their own mouths. Maybe God is telling you the same thing today: “Just keep quiet for a moment… I’m doing something.”
Not every rumor deserves a response. Not every accusation requires your energy. Not every season calls for noise.
Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is close your mouth, quiet your heart, and allow God to be God, and when the moment finally comes and God says “Now shout,” the walls you couldn’t move with all your strength will fall effortlessly with one breath.
