“I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends…” John 15:15
I am reminded of a time, when I was in attachment during my Hospitality Training at Serena Sweetwaters Tented Camp, must be over 19 years now! So for three weeks I worked without a day off, to earn a whole weekend with my family.
So the weekend out was earned. I texted the M.D of my college where I was studying, as should be… but he didn’t see the text nor reply. I assumed he had read it, hapa ndo sasa story inashika joto… Sorry its going to be a bit longer today…
How did we used to say it? No sooner had I reached Nairobi, than the school MD got to Nanyuki. When he didn’t find me at the Camp, he declared—hapo hapo—I am NO Longer a student of His College. Tutaendelea another day.
When a man says “I no longer…”, it can strip you of something—status, opportunity, belonging. But when God says it, everything shifts upward. In John 15:15, Jesus isn’t dismissing His disciples; He is lifting them into a new class of relationship. His “I no longer” is not a demotion — it is a divine upgrade.
And just hearing those words — I no longer… — haaa, it excites the heart. Because wrapped in that short phrase is a spiritual transition, a line between who you were and who you are becoming.
There are struggles, challenges, and mindsets you simply can’t carry anymore once God speaks His “I no longer” over your life. There are burdens you can no longer walk with, fears you can no longer entertain, insecurities you can no longer give space to.
Why?
Because God no longer calls you by the old name.
Hata usiende mbali… Jesus Himself says, “I no longer call you servants…”
Wuuuuiii! That one truth changes everything.
A servant stands at a distance, but a friend stands in relationship. A servant follows instructions without access to the Master’s heart, but a friend is invited into conversations, trusted with secrets, drawn deeper into His presence. Jesus looks at you — with all your history, your weaknesses, your journey — and says, “I no longer call you servant… I call you friend.”
Jesus has spoken the new name: Friend.
And once God calls you friend, that identity covers every season — the certain ones, the uncertain ones, the in-between ones. Even in weakness, you are still friend. Even in waiting, still friend. Even in transition, still friend.
And that truth — He no longer calls me servant… — becomes the anchor of your identity.
Walk boldly in it.
Walk confidently in it.
Walk as one who knows: I am a friend of God.
