JESUS TAKE THE WHEEL

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” – Proverbs 3:5–6 (NIV)

There’s an old gospel song that always gets to the core of my heart: “Jesus, take the wheel. Take it from my hands, ‘cause I can’t do this on my own.”

Every time I hear it, I imagine all the things I try to juggle by myself—the plans, the pressures, the burdens—and I realize how weary and tired I often become. There are moments when strength fails, wisdom fades, and all my careful strategies come to nothing. It is in those moments that the hymn reminds me: I cannot manage life on my own. I need Jesus to take the wheel.

I remember one day, after running so many errands in Nairobi, I had to drive down to Mombasa. The truth? I had barely two hours of sleep before hitting the road. By the time I got near Salama, my body simply gave up. I could no longer push myself. In that moment, I had no choice but to surrender the wheel to a young lad, Kiriba, who helped drive us safely all the way to Mtwapa.

That moment remains etched in my heart as a vivid reminder of life itself. No matter how strong or skilled we think we are, by ourselves we can’t make it. At some point, fatigue, failure, or frustration will force us to admit: “I cannot do this alone.”

And that is exactly where God wants us—at the place of surrender.

Like a driver who gives up control for the sake of safety, we must hand over the wheel of our lives to Christ. He is not only a co-driver; He is Lord. He sees what lies ahead, the sharp bends, the hidden dangers, and even the resting places we desperately need but often ignore.

Friend, maybe you are tired from trying to steer life alone. Perhaps you’ve been pushing on with only “two hours of sleep” in your soul—exhausted, yet unwilling to let go.

Today, hear the gentle whisper of the Spirit: “Trust God, Let Him drive. He knows the way.”

When we surrender, we don’t lose control—we gain peace. Jesus takes the wheel, and we discover His promise in full: “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

So pause for a moment. Breathe.

And pray: “Lord Jesus, take the wheel. I cannot do this on my own. Lead me safely to where You want me to be.”
